How Dental Crowns Help
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped covering placed over a damaged or compromised tooth to provide strength and support. A dental crown can restore full function to a weakened tooth, potentially saving a tooth that might otherwise require extraction. If you are in need of a dental bridge to fill in missing teeth, your crowns can also serve as a sturdy anchor to support these dentures. For patients who are missing a tooth, a crown can be created to attach to a dental implant surgically placed in the jawbone. This restoration provides the full function of a natural tooth. Though typically considered a restorative procedure, crowns may also be used for strictly cosmetic purposes. The many uses of crowns include:
Your New Crown
Prior to creating your custom crown, the first step is to prepare the tooth by cleaning it and removing diseased or damaged tissue. This ensures the health, stability, and longevity of the tooth. Once the tooth is prepped, the doctor will use his in-office lab to create your crown. The entire process takes just a couple of hours, and provides you with a durable restoration that can last for decades.
During the first few days after the crown is placed, you may need to exercise caution to protect the new restoration. After this initial adjustment period, however, you should feel completely comfortable at rest and when biting and chewing. Care for a new crown just you would your natural teeth.
Dr. Rothenberg is able to offer same-day crowns through the use of CEREC® technology, which allows him to create incredibly precise restorations in about an hour. This convenient process allows patients to avoid having to wear a temporary crown as they await the return of their restoration from a manufacturing lab. The CEREC® imaging system creates a highly accurate, detailed digital image of your teeth, then sends this data to a chairside computer, which generates a digital model. This model guides computerized tools that mill a beautiful crown out of tooth-colored porcelain or ceramics. Created in the office, the crown is placed the same day.
Almost 100% of our single-unit crowns are made in the office using CEREC® technology. However, when patients require a metal crown, we will send the impressions to an offsite lab.
