Periodontal Laser Treatment

Periodontal Laser Treatment

Dr. Rothenberg also uses laser technology to provide comprehensive gum disease treatment. Gum disease develops when plaque accumulates below the gumline and eventually becomes tartar. This results in pockets of bacteria that destroy the connective tissues between the teeth and gums, causing gum recession and bleeding. If left untreated, gum disease can change from mild gingivitis to advanced periodontitis, which can result in eventual tooth loss.
Initial treatment of gum disease may involve scaling and root planing, a deep cleaning process that removes tartar and bacteria from the tooth roots. Dr. Rothenberg uses a diode laser to sterilize the dental pocket and promote reattachment of the gum tissue to the tooth. The laser also works to sterilize the gums, eliminating bacteria and promoting quick healing without irritation. Dr. Rothenberg uses the Waterlase MD® laser to treat the diseased gum pocket by stimulating regrowth of bone and reattachment of the gum to the tooth. This technique can eliminate the need for traditional gum grafting, which can be painful and requires a lengthy recovery.
