Dental lasers are highly effective for the diagnosis and early detection of tooth decay. Dr. Rothenberg uses the KaVO DIAGNOdent laser for quick and efficient detection of decay and pre-cavities that would be difficult to find using traditional examination techniques. The DIAGNOdent can detect small areas of decay in the earliest stages, when a small filling may be sufficient to treat the affected tooth.
To begin this type of laser analysis, a hygienist will clean the surfaces of your teeth to remove plaque and tartar. Next, the hygienist will dry your teeth in preparation for scanning with the DIAGNOdent device. Dr. Rothenberg will move a small light-emitting tool from tooth to tooth to detect decay. Healthy teeth exhibit little to no reflective light in response to the light emitted from the DIAGNOdent. Decaying teeth, on the other hand, reflect larger amounts of this light. The attached machine produces audio signals when these values fluctuate, signaling the possibility of decay. This tool is extremely accurate, and does not cause discomfort or side effects.
